    Our Historical Past

The First Presbyterian Church of Greer was originally organized as Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church in 1841.  Today several members are eighth and ninth generation descendents of the founding members.  The first little church was located at Bailey’s Cross Roads and was literally rolled into Greers in 1880.  With logs and forty mules, the small frame building made its journey to the new town of Greers and was placed on the site where the church is located today.

In 1937 the church was the first church in South Carolina to become incorporated.  The church was granted a charter in the name First Presbyterian Church of Greer.  In 1949 the first educational building was erected.  A new manse was also built on the site of the old two-story home.

1967 saw the rise of an additional educational building with a social hall and kitchen.  The church also bought the adjoining property and the old Central School, which later burned.

The years from 1970-1980 were years of big growth in numbers and most importantly in outreach.  The love and concern of its members affected many people during this time.  1983 saw the completion of the family life center.  The new gym attracted many young people and thus the church grew steadily.  In 1986 the Pioneer and Senior High classrooms were completed.  At this time the Session-History room and Parlor began construction, which was completed in 1987.

In 1991, the Sesquicentennial was one of the church’s proudest moments.

A published history was completed and gave people a chance to look back on the past but to also have visions for the future.

To embrace the new millennium, the church made the decision to remain at its present location and has developed architectural drawings for a 15-20 year master plan for expansion of facilities.  It has been and continues to be a story of one church’s walk of faith.
